I studied nutritional therapy for 3 years at Patrick Holford’s Institute of Optimum Nutrition in London, graduating in 2007 with a Dip ION. Since then I’ve run my own practice in London, on the Western Isles and now Edinburgh. I’ve worked with individuals, and have run cooking classes and weight management groups. I’ve also given presentations at a corporate and community level, written local press articles and have been interviewed on BBC TV.
My interest in nutritional therapy as a powerful tool for healing and managing health conditions began when my mother was suffering the late stages of cancer 15 years ago and we were recommended the Penny Brohn Cancer Care Centre in Bristol. We got lots of nutrition advice, recipes and practical meal ideas. Although mum wasn’t doing the cooking at that stage, it was hugely empowering for her to partake in the decision making of what foods to eat and drink to best support her health. It triggered a huge interest in nutritional therapy for me, but not one that I realised in my early 20s would end up as a career change!
A few years later I had my own health problems. They weren’t life-threatening but involved a lot of physical pain and mental anguish. I was offered pain management therapy and medication that might have dulled the pain, but might also have dulled me! Ironically, I was at the beginning of my 3rd year of nutrition studies and so decided to research my condition myself and get myself better. It took a while, but I did. There is no doubt that my diet, supplements and a wonderful acupuncturist all contributed to my recovery. Although it wasn’t particularly welcome at the time, this does mean I have first-hand experience of practising what I preach and it working! I now practise as a nutritional therapist in Edinburgh and am passionate about the difference nutritional therapy can make.
I’m a former club swimmer and runner and have personally experienced how nutrition can make a big difference to performance and well-being. At the moment, I’m training for an open-water 10km swim and enjoying developing a nutrition plan for myself, not only so that my muscles recover quickly and I have enough fuel, but also to keep my immune and digestive system on top form.
I like to lead an active, busy and healthy life and I need really good nutrition to be able to do that! The food I eat is varied and tasty and quick to prepare – all the things that I would recommend to you.
